Mum Puppettheatre Announces 2005-2006 Family Series

For Immediate Release: August 2, 2005

Philadelphia, PA – Mum Puppettheatre, named "one of Philadelphia's top attractions for kids" by Fodors Travel Books, has announced its season lineup for 2005-2006. The season includes a three-show Family Series of productions for all ages, as well as an Evening series consisting of three productions for adults. The family fun begins with a special summer engagement of Jack and the Beanstalk, and continues with three additional shows throughout the year.

Jack & the Beanstalk – special summer engagement!
Written and performed by Jim Napolitano
August 6 – 28, 2005

Poor Jack! All he was trying to do was help his family out, but somehow, he managed to set a giant on the loose! This classic Appalachian folktale of a cattle sale gone wrong is performed in four parts by Jim Napolitano, the artist behind our 2003 production Father Goose Tales. Using vivid shadow puppetry, lively songs and humor the whole family will enjoy, this master puppeteer tells not only the story of Jack and his ill-fated beans, but also other short stories and vignettes. Featuring hand-crafted shadow figures, this show is sure to delight theatre fans of all ages!

The Emperor's New Clothes
Written and performed by Grey Seal Puppets
October 8 – October 30, 2005
Hans Christian Andersen's beloved story takes on a whole new dimension as this classic tale is turned into a fable by renowned puppet troupe Grey Seal Puppets. The crafty tailors are foxes, the prime minister a near-sighted camel, the Emperor's councilor a befuddled old walrus…and the Emperor himself is a big fat pig!

A vain ruler who loves dressing up in fancy clothes, the Emperor easily falls for two tailors' story of a magic cloth. According to their yarn, only those who are smart and good at what they do can see the cloth – and those who can't see the cloth are not fit for their jobs and should be fired! It takes the honesty of a child to see through the scheming tailors' lies.

Featuring lively music and audience participation, The Emperor's New Clothes will have audiences in stitches even as it teaches a valuable lesson.

The Velveteen Rabbit
Written and directed by Robert Smythe
Original Music by Adam Wernick
November 25 - December 18, 2005

A brand-new plush rabbit discovers that there's more to life than the four walls of the nursery. From the other playthings, he learns that there is a difference between being a toy and being real. His owner's love can make him real, but almost too late, the now well-loved and well-worn rabbit learns what it means to be alive!

Back by popular demand for its 12th year, The Velveteen Rabbit is performed with hand puppets, rod puppets, shadows and masks, capturing the magic of this well-loved children's classic. Award-winning composer Adam Wernick's original music and Mum's unique style of wordless narrative combine in this production unlike any other production, and will provide an experience for families to remember together for years to come.
