- mum news - A New Generation Breathes Life into a Dead Horse - EQUUS runs October 24 through November 17 For Immediate Release: October 5, 2001 Philadelphia, PA - Directed by William Roudebush and starring Greg Wood as the psychiatrist who helps a young man confront his own personal demons, Mum Puppettheatre presents Peter Shaffer's Triple Tony Award winner Equus at its theatre at 115 Arch Street in Old City, Philadelphia, October 24 through November 17, 2001. Performances run Wednesday though Saturday at 8 pm and Saturday and Sunday at 2 pm. Tickets are $14 - $22. Call the box office at (215) 925-7686 or log onto www.mumpuppet.org. Equus, winner of the Tony and Drama Critics Circle awards for Best Play, and a sensation when it opened on Broadway in 1975, is an electrifying journey into the mind of a confused seventeen year-old stable-boy who has plunged a spike into the eyes of five horses. "I approached Robert Smytbe about two years ago, concerned about the growing disaffection of youth and the culture of violence in today's schools," says director William Roudebush. "The world that surrounds us today makes Equus seems prophetic. I felt it was clear that we had to stage this play before a modern audience." Led by choreographer and mask maker, Robert Smythe, graduates of the famed Dell'Arte International School of Physical Theatre will join creative forces with a star-studded cast, including Barrymore Award winners Greg Wood and Maureen Torsney-Weir. Equus has already been hailed by Philadelphia City Paper as one of the hottest tickets in town. Critics around the world have called Mum Puppettheatre "the most enchanting, innovative hauntingly beautiful theatre anyone will ever see." Equus marks the first time in Mum Puppettheatre's sixteen-year history that the company has produced a previously written play. To date, Mum Puppettheatre has earned three Citations of Excellence from Union Internationale de la Marionette and six Barrymore Awards for Excellence in Theatre. This year, Mum Puppettheatre has been nominated for two Barrymore Awards. More information is available at www.mumpuppet.org or by calling (215) 925-8686. # # # |
